Cussing Curses
I heard a preacher say that cuss words are not just words, but the actual names of demons. His name was Curtis “Earthquake” Kelley. Specifically, he said that when he was a child, he summoned F-U-C-etcetera, and the demon came. It showed up in his bedroom with real power and abilities, and the demon possessed him shortly afterward.
Now, occultism was in this boy’s bloodline, so he saw a lot of evil and did a lot of evil. He had demonic spirits at his beck and call. He started practicing voodoo at a very young age. That is not everybody’s story. However, what is not unique to him is speech and the impact of language. He watched his voodoo-practicing grandmother call on the name F-U-C-etcetera in order to kill a man, and it worked. The man died right there on the spot. What he was describing would suggest that what we have come to know as curse words are actually curses carried out by real demons, hanging onto everything we say and everything we release into the atmosphere.
Earthquake used Isaiah 29:4 to explain his demonic encounter. When he conjured up the demon, it actually came out of the ground through a trapdoor. Isaiah speaks about “low speech” and its connection to a familiar spirit. Earthquake suggests that when you spew curse words and engage in “low speech,” you are inviting familiar spirits into your life and the lives of those around you.
“And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust.” Isaiah 29:4 KJV
But maybe it is not that deep. Maybe James exaggerated when he stated that “…the tongue is a fire. The tongue is a world of unrighteousness placed among our members. It stains the whole body, sets the course of life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” James 3:6 CSB
Maybe the fact that Jesus can cast out a spirit with a word has no bearing on whether a word, or words, can invite spirits into us.
Maybe the Proverbs are just words.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” -Proverbs 18:21 NKJV
“There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health.” -Proverbs 12:18
“Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and put perverse lips far from you.” -Proverbs 4:24
“Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.” -Proverbs 16:24
I am hoping you can discern my sarcasm. But truthfully, sometimes we do not consider the weight of our words or the importance of how we wield our tongues. We don’t take it seriously or spiritually.
Whether you believe the preacher’s testimony or not, what cannot be debated is that God cares about our speech. We have the Bible to support that claim. And for those of us who need improvement in that area, James said it: no human can tame the tongue. That lets me know it is the work of the Holy Spirit. You can ask Him to help you wash your heart in the water of the Word. It is out of the abundance of your heart that you speak. Ask yourself: What am I full of? What is leaking? What is bursting at the seams of my lips? We can ask The Helper to help us.
If you guard your heart, you watch your mouth. And if you watch your mouth, you protect your life and the lives of those around you.
